People tend to focus on loss and I’m sure that losing your sight was very difficult but what is your favourite part about being blind? What have you gained from these unfortunate circumstances other than an improvement of your other senses?
I received this question on my Youtube channel and wanted to give it a longer answer as I haven’t yet addressed the positives associated with blindness. In my personal opinion, probably like many others that are in the same position as me, blindness is hard and you have to make yourself be the most optimistic person you can possibly be sometimes. Nevertheless that doesn’t mean I haven’t found happiness. Like I said in my video my senses have increased. I have thought about the things in my life that actually matter because when everything gets hard the only people that are there for you are those that care and love you. I feel like the relationships in my life have got a lot stronger as I need to, naturally, depend on the ones I love more. I think a lot of people in this world can be superficial and being blind allows me to figure out who actually will stick by me through everything and this is something I love. I have a new love for literature and music, I appreciate complex plot lines and all different music genres. Before I went blind I was quite limited and never really expanded into different areas, I have found a new love for description and the vivid imagery an author can create through words, I allow myself to be consumed with these things which helps me relax and escape from reality for a few hours. I listen to YouTube videos and films with a completely different take on them, I analyse the music and content a lot more than I did. I get a different type of enjoyment out of these things, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you change your perspective on something you will get more enjoyment out of it. I don’t think about what I have lost when I sit and listen, I think about what I can still enjoy, which is still a lot in the big scheme of things. I really like cooking and have the occasional new recipe to try which is also fun if I am organised and systematic about things. One of the main things in my life that has increased is my determination to help others. I would love to be a charity worker, teacher or a lawyer who teaches and fights for the rights of the disabled. I want to be an advocate that strives for everyone’s best interests. I want to help people not just accept second best but keep pushing for more. I want to help people love the skin they are in and get the best out of life. You can’t control what life throws at you but you can control how you deal with situations and how long it takes you to bounce back. No matter how many times something knocks you down have the confidence to brush yourself off and get back up again because people can help you but ultimately you have to do it yourself. There are many things in life you can still enjoy it’s just not easy to keep telling yourself this everyday but each month will get better with time, you will still feel the frustration and emotion but the things you put in place to make life easier will go a long way in determining your happiness. I love being a Youtuber and a Blogger as it allows me to educate people who don’t know about blindness and tell people who are dealing with it that they aren’t alone as I’m dealing with it too.
